The effects of debt Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

The hearts of debt - Essay Example indeed investors can receive a higher return on their investment. However, debt redundantively leads to higher chance of bankruptcy and may restrict managerial behaviours. Thus the firm becomes more risky and on lower levels of return the earns to stock holders declines. The effects of debt on weighted average cost of heavy(p) (WACC) are uncertain. It is known that debt reduces the weighted average cost of dandy since debt is cheaper than common equity due to measure saving. But since a higher return is demanded from common stock holders the actual effect is not know. Agency be as well as financial distress may limit the usage of debt. Distress cost are usually higher for firms with significant nonphysical assets. The precise identification of a firms optimal capital structure is impossible. There is also no exact measure for the effects of capital structure of a firm on its cost of capital or on the firms stock prices. Based on this we can on ly estimate to an extent only what the best capital structure would be.The trade-off theory of leverage is one in which a firm trades off the favourable corporate tax treatments, that are, the benefits of debt financing, against high absorb rates and costs of bankruptcies. Thus the firm optimizes the capital structure of the firm and balances the debt and equity in an optimum ratio. The trade off theory in effect realizes that agency cos... The higher the leverage of the firm the higher are the chances of distress faced by the managers. Thus as the level of debt increases in the firm, the cost of debt also increases. This makes debt more expensive as we take more debt. Similar is the case with equity as the debt level increases in the firm, the return on equity demanded by common stock holders increases. The salient features and implications of the trade-off theory are1. Debt becomes less expensive than common or preferred stock as interest stipendiary on it is a deductible expense and thus debt provides tax shelters. However, firms do not use 100% debt since this increases the risk of the firm and thus to reduce costs of bankruptcies.2. The tax benefits attained from low levels of leverage outweigh the bankruptcy costs but the bankruptcy costs outweigh the tax benefits at high levels of leverage. Thus a balance of the leverage in a firm has to be kept.3. Nonetheless optimal capital structures do exist that can balance the benefits of tax shelters attained from leverage against its bankruptcy costs. The method adopted to minimize the weighted average cost of capital is as followsThe cost of debt and the cost of equity is evaluated at different levels or ratios of debt. Based on this a weighted average cost of capital (WACC) is calculated by assigning market value of capital and market value of debt. This then gives the point where WACC can be minimized. This point is the optimum capital structure.Agency Costs of Free Cash FlowJensen explains that excess cash f low is the excess cash flow over the required to fund all projects with a positive net present value. Thus fundamentally free cash flow is the cash flow available for dividend payout.

If every physical event has a sufficient physical cause, how can a functionalist account for amiable causation - judge ExampleThe most important point to note about the functionalism is that it indicates that mental states which constitute beliefs, being in pain and desires ar composed entirely by their functional roles. Being a theoretical level existing between implementation and physical output, functionalism is different from Cartesian dualism which supports the physical substance and mental independency. The order of this paper is to discuss how functionalist account for mental causation given that every physical event has a sufficient physical cause. One of the major worries that are experienced in functionalism is the problem of mental causation. This refers to facing a problem of accounting for the idea that intentional mental state and intentional thoughts are triggers of intentional actions1. Mental causation covers the minds interaction with the rest of the world and how it influences the behavior of individuals. One of the major sub-division of the problem of mental causation is problem of mental causal exclusion. Others are anomalism and externalism problems. A good example of the causal exclusion problem is indicated when pain is experienced and it is generally linked to a certain state, and the higher(prenominal) properties of that state occurs, then argument that it is pain can casually irrelevant. In dealing with the problem of mental causation, various responses have emerged. According to Antony and Levine 1997, the problem occurred due(p) to highly restrictive causation whereby a cause has to produce its effect. Other philosophers indicate that causation covers the relationships that exist between various events that must be invoked in order to produce a certain behavior. Recently, causal exclusion problem has been noted to relate with theories of mental states. Theorists such as Anthony and Levine indicated that even though mental stat es can be defined based on their

For instance, a number of developing nations contain such primitive storage and transportation systems that make global distributions inadequate or at times, impossible. The presenters do this claims when they were explaining the scenario using food as an example. This is because food is frequently damaged by the time it reaches the destination of business in particular nations (Jensen & Hansen 2006, p. 443). In addition, according to them, this circumstance can be compounded with lack of adequate sewer systems and unclean water. I made a contribution to this topic by asserting that exporters in the United States should be informed that particular technological disparities have an impact on the nature of exportable products. For instance, internet and computer utilization in a number of developing nations may be nonexistent or extremely thin. ... They likewise argued that marketing managers and researchers examine degrees of consumer ethnocentrism to determine the degree of local biases in the business environment. They also argued that consumer disidentification has a tremendous effect on purchasing choices beyond and above the effect of consumer ethnocentrism. In my argu ment, I highlighted that components, for example, ethnic identification and acculturation are significant indicators of both consumer disidentification and consumer ethnocentrism. In addition, I explained that businesses could evaluate the degree of consumer disidentification as part of their continuous tracking studies to determine the degree of consumer disidentification in their local market to seduce specified insights into regional disparities in consumer disidentification levels. Such details could be employed to signify whether the national origin of the commodity should be marketed in the respective areas (Shankarmahesh 2006, p. 153). Jonathan Wild Henry Fielding EssayThe History of the life of Jonathan Wild is the philosophical disposition of a criminal in a rightfulness sense belonging to the group of Thief Takers, he emerged as one of the Greatest man in the world of Crime. With the irony as a official document and a satirical disposition, English novelist Henry Fieldings bought the real Jonathan Wild into his words who was great but goodness was not his vocation and caliber. Jonathan Wild belonged to the genre of pinch Takers of London. Thieve takers were the ordinary men and women who were rewarded by the police man if they successfully capture highwaymen or law breakers and hand all over them to the police or prosecute them themselves. Majority of them were men and they find this mildew very lucrative. The rates of each Highwaymen, coiners and burglars were worth ? 40 and additional ? 100 was rewarded to them if the crime was committed at bottom the range of five miles of Charing Cross.Jonathan Wi ld was the most popular and clever of all thief takers at his contemporary period. In the beginning of the eighteenth century he had caught and put before the magistrate many criminals of London. Besides, he would also help in recovering the stolen goods and would demand hefty sum from them. His disposition towards crime created before him an public figure of a respected citizen in front of not only the regimen but also of whole of London. This attitude in him cashier defined as Greatness, but what nobody knew behind his Greatness lies a most clever and hard-core criminal and a thief. Here the complexity in the constitution of protagonist comes in as confined within his nature was a hidden bad man. The recovery of the stolen goods was the part of his great plan. He var. up his own empire, with several gangs who had their bases in several districts of London. These gangs had the only business of robbing and pick pocketing. He had also set up specialized gangs for looting churches, gangs over prostitutes, gangs who used to collect protection money from but he never came forward to head the gang but only give them direction. Anyone found neglecting his work or cheated him was immediately reported to police with solid evidences and witnesses who were themselves Wilds man and in return Wild would get cash reward, therefore narrator abruptly described him as not Good. He was a great hypocrite and was so clever that he always go himself scotch cede as no one could prove him guilty. He always would show up his gratitude to those who would favor him and show his loyalty towards him and would go to any extent to punish those who would show disloyalty towards them. He would also give protection to those who would seek his to escape from law but also in several cases would himself hand these very people to the authorities not found worthy of him or if get tired. Ideology vs. united church of Canada’s advertisement Essay Example for Free

Ideology vs. united church of Canadas advertizing EssayIdeology is a Representation of the Imaginary Relationship of Individuals to their Real Conditions of Existence Louis Althusser, 1970 Many companies use publicizing as their way of attracting customers. They tend to create ideological perspective inwardly their advertisements to show their stand on the societys standards. Most of the time, advertisements are made for women. If men and babies needs were advertised, women are still discover of it. It shows that in the ideology of the society, women are the determiner or the decision-maker of what should be use as a necessity or luxury. This is what advertisement for, it radicalize the essence of what is important and necessary. Advertising is signifi houset because, in consumer capitalism, individuals depend on it for meanings a source of amicable information embedded in commodities that mediate interpersonal relations and personal identity. Advertising should therefore b e conceived as an important institution in the consumer society because it produces patterned systems of meaning which play a key role in individual socialization and social reproduction. However, in the context of ideology and advertisement as a whole, advertisements are made because we want to prove something or we want to trim back a virtue on a certain aspect of the society. Through this, we could be able to spread our ideas and perspectives towards assorted issues and arguments that exist in the society today. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to probe a certain advertisement in connection to the Ideological State Apparatus of Louis Althusser to determine its meaning and rationalization. The chosen advertisement is a child advertisement. The advertisement showed a picture of a baby with a medical wristband stating WARNING some re-assembly of priorities and beliefs may be required. This advertisement suggests that parenthood is not an well-to-do thing. As parents, peop le tend to view life more seriously. Once a baby is born, e realthing will change not according to plan only if according to right. Wandercafe. ca stated in the advertisement that parenthood changes everything including how you view the world. Most often, this scenario happens if the baby is a wanted child because if it is not, parents tend to disregard their responsibility towards their children especially the fathers. Nevertheless, being a parent is a gift from God as we all know. In the perspective of the society and our enculturation, we view parenthood as a form of required responsibility. Once a child is born, we need to settle our priorities as based on the needs of the child and would not management on our necessities and luxuries. In poor families, even if the parents could not eat, as long as their child has its milk, problem would not exist. This situation shows that parents can do everything and anything unsloped to make their child safe and healthy. This is what th e advertisement is trying to impose parenthood is an obligation that should be taken into consideration because it requires re-assemble of priorities and beliefs. In the perspective of ideology and advertisement, this advertisement can be said as part of the Ideological State Apparatus (ISA). According to Louis Althusser (1970), an Ideological State Apparatus is a certain cast of realities which present themselves to the immediate observer in the form of distinct and specialized institution.Because the advertisement came from the people of the United Church of Canada, it can be said as a religious Ideological State Apparatus. He also stated that the distinction of ISAs from (Repressive) State Apparatus is that the Repressive State Apparatus functions by forcefulness, whereas the ideology State Apparatus function by ideology. This is the fact that the (Repressive) State Apparatus functions massively and pre governingly by repression (including physical repression), while surgical operation secondarily by ideology. (There is no such thing as a purely repressive apparatus.)In the same way, provided inversely, it is essential to say that for their part the Ideological State Apparatuses function massively and predominantly by ideology, but they also function secondarily by repression, even if ultimately, but only ultimately, this is very attenuated and concealed, even symbolic. (Althusser 1970) Advertisement has different impact to society and its institutions such as education, culture, and religion. In the chosen advertisement, these three factors exist as they give parcel to the perspective and ideology of the ad.It was seen through different aspects and reasons. In the institution of education, this advertisement educate people especially parents to become aware with their responsibilities and obligations towards their child or children because it was the more or less important thing that should be taken into account. When it comes to culture, it shows t he stand of the society when it comes to parenthood because this is part of the culture parents should abide by the rule of the law that they should love their children for they use up conceived them.In the religious institution or the church, this advertisement shows what is right in opposition to evil. Church stated that parents should do their obligations not by their choice but by the rule of the church because it was the teaching of God. In the pre-capitalist historical period which I have examined extremely broadly, it is absolutely clear that there was one dominant Ideological State Apparatus, the Church, which concentrated within it not only religious functions, but also educational ones, and a large proportion of the functions of communications and culture. It is no accident that all ideological struggle, from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century, starting with the first shocks of the Reformation, was concentrated in an anti-clerical and anti-religious struggle rather t his is a function on the dot of the dominant position of the religious Ideological State Apparatus. (Althusser 1970) In the chosen advertisement, Church is dominant and repressive in some angle because it tried to impose a law or a rule. It was shown in the medical wristband of the baby. Using the word warning is an implication of notice that there must be an action to consider. The ideology of the advertisement is actually true when it comes to responsibilities of the parents but the Church overpowers the parents on what they should do and act. Though it was just a simple warning, capitalism can be seen based on its attack and point of justification. As a whole, the advertisement means more than what it wanted to say. The ideology of the church can be said as a form of repression or simply a justification of what is true as based on the standard of the society. Advertisement has different meanings based on the perceiver. It was the audiences obligation to perceive the advertisement on their own context and ideology. Ideology is innate for all of us. It should not be taken for granted because it is an armor of our thinking, rights, and stand towards the rules and laws of the society. Culture, education, and church are underlying institutions that we need to consider in analyzing a certain advertisement because these factors are the most important aspects of humanity whether we oppose or consider their specificities from the past, present, and future civilization.Works Cited Althousser, Louis.
